What to Wear Wednesday ~ Brenham Family Photographer

This what to wear post features a pretty pastel palette perfect (that's a lot of p's) for a fall family session. Keep in mind when planning your family session, steer away from having each family member wear the same color. Choose colors in the same tones or even different shades. Also, the use of different texture (cable knit baby jumper, ruffle shirt, lacy cut-out on mom's top) can add interest to your images. Gone (hopefully) are the days when every one wears white tops and jeans or all black. Allow each family member's personality to shine in your portraits.

I thought I would share some updated photos of our little pup. He's 4 months old now and has grown 3 pounds since we got him. I say these photos are updated, however he got a really bad hair cut the other day. Needless to say, I won't be posting pictures of that. I can't wait until his hair grows back out and he looks like my lil fur baby again. But here are some my husband took of us :)

I had another Senior Model (Rep) session the other day! Yay for guys who are cool enough not to mind having a camera in their face! Or at least putting up with it :) Stephen did a great job! At the beginning of the session he told me "I'm not very photographable." To which I chuckled and said, "We will see about that!" After about 3 clicks of the shutter I happened to look down at my screen. I looked back at him and said, "Stephen you are definitely photogenic." Haha I love when people say that because they always end up doing a stellar job and their photos turn out awesome! Just like Stephen's!

So, I don't know if you guys realize this or not, but they are already putting Christmas stuff out. Seems like they get it out earlier every year. Heck, they might as well just leave it out all year round! It's like those people who leave up their Christmas lights all year. They may actually be on to something. Who wouldn't want to have Christmas 12 months out of the year? Okay, well the music might drive me nuts. I can only stand to hear "Christmas Shoes"....like, never.

Let me get back on track here... So for those of you who love to use family photos for Christmas cards or perhaps you are on a budget and just want a couple photos to display of your family, this is the deal for you!

I was so excited when Melissa asked me to do her maternity photos. She's also a very talented photographer and I knew she would be up for anything! They are a fun couple who are obviously very eager to meet their new baby girl in October. I can't wait to meet her either, since I am also going to be doing some family portraits for them when she arrives!

I was so afraid we were going to get rained on during our session but as you will see towards the end of the post, the clouds gave way to a beautiful sunset and left us with some luscious light. Mmm...I love when that happens!

Meet Milo ~ Brenham Texas Photographer

I have wanted an inside puppy my whole life. I've had so many different animals to try to satisfy that desire. A hamster named Roxie, a bunny named Olive, numerous kittens (all whom I loved dearly), fish, but they never worked out for some reason or another. So after our last precious cat Piper got ran over while we were on vacation not too long ago, I decided that I would look for the perfect puppy for us. I did lots of research and knew I wanted one that was hypoallergenic, a good lap dog, friendly... and that led me to the Havanese breed and I fell in love with their teddy bear look. But those guys were super pricey. We just happened to come across a lady who was selling an adorable little Peek-a-poo at Wal-Mart (where else? haha) on a day that I was really wishing I could love on some puppies. That's all it took. I quickly looked up facts about Peek-a-poos and their temperament sounded a lot like Havanese. And we came home with this little fluff ball we call Milo.

He is the sweetest puppy! It has been a challenge training him, he was only 7 weeks old when we got him. But on his 2nd day with me, he learned how to sit on command. I knew then he must be pretty smart! We are still working on potty training but the accidents have starting happening few and far in between. He has lots of energy but when he crashes, he is out for a while! He is 9 weeks now and cuter than ever. Here are a few pictures I took of him before Heath and I left for youth camp. I'm convinced he grew a ton in the 5 days we were gone!

There hasn't been a person who has met Milo that hasn't smiled ear to ear and commented on his cuteness. Even the manliest of men have to give him a pat on the head and agree that he is a cute puppy :)

Since I'm so bad and haven't posted in so long...I'm going to bring you up to date on my recent sessions. So all of you who might have been hoping to catch a glimpse of your images on my blog. Much apologies! I hope you aren't too mad at me. Hopefully this will make up for it, just a little bit? :)

Meet sweet little Rhett. His mom and I go way back...to the first grade to be exact! All through elementary school, high school, and college, I have had the same two best friends. Sarah was the first to get married and now the first to have a baby. We three have experienced quite a lot together and it was so fun to be able to photograph Sarah's first baby's newborn portraits.

I had the honor of photographing a good friend's wedding. It was such a fun wedding to photograph! This awesome bike was used for holding the utensils at the buffet table but I had other plans for it the minute I saw it!

This little pea was such a cutie! I love it when they sleep for me! Haha! Here's baby Zoey

Then there was baby Adelyn. (Can you tell I've had lots of newborns lately?) I photographed her mom and dad's engagement portraits a while back. They were one of my very first engagement sessions! So it was really neat to get to do her newborn portraits! She was so precious and had a beautiful head of hair!

So that's the past few sessions in a nutshell! :) I'll be posting another fun session soon!

I know it's been a while...I'm ashamed that I haven't posted in over a month. Senior season was a whirlwind and I had some great kids to photograph! I'll be sure and do a senior post soon to share images of some of the great graduating seniors I had this year. But for now, I want to show off this adorable session I had last week. I may be a little biased with this girlie, but if you don't think she is adorable...well shame on you :) Lil' J is about to turn ONE! I can't believe it has been almost a year since I did her birth photos and newborn portraits... she definitely holds a special place in my heart. She also has helped me put together my "belly to baby" (haven't come up with a name for it yet) package that I will hopefully be announcing soon.

I had the honor of photographing little Miss E and her mom and dad for her first birthday photos. She is a cutie patootie! Boy did she make us work to make her smile! Thank goodness for my trusty assistants. They sang "Patty Cake", "Itsy Bitsy Spider", played Peekaboo and the little stinker would barely crack a smile! Towards the end of the session, we got out the cheerios and she started putting on a show! Too bad we didn't think of that sooner!

Prom 2011 ~ Brenham Senior Photographer

It is so strange to be taking my youngest sister's Senior Prom photos... I never got to know her very well. I went away to college when she was still in elementary school and from college I moved to Texas. So my biggest memories of her was just a tiny little thing, the toddler who got me into trouble during church because of her giggling, the cute little doll we used to dress up and put makeup on. So to see her, in her Senior year, going to prom was just a little bizarre. But never-the-less, here she is. All grown up and looking so pretty in her prom dress. The best thing about it was she asked me to be there to take pictures and do her makeup. That made me feel pretty good :)

That is just what these babies were at their very first photo session. They slept the whole session (with the exception of a couple of fits that didn't last long!), cooperated with all the crazy things I made them do, and only tinkled on us once each. That's a pretty good record! :) I think it went pretty well for my first twin session! And well....I'll just get to the images.

Now, you can't tell me that those aren't two of the most adorable girl babies ever... :)

Home - A Personal Post ~ Brenham Area Photographer

Rarely do I write about myself on here. I don't know why. I used to talk a lot more about myself and my family (me, my husband and our 2 cats) and my home. So I guess this post is over due.

Right now we live in a charming gray home with gingerbread trim, a front porch with a swing, and lots of character. It was, so I thought, the home of my dreams. It was out of our price range, but we just happened to meet the sister of the lady who owned the house. She talked her into letting us rent it (at an amazingly low rate). While I was thrilled to be moving into this precious house, I was really bummed that I wouldn't be able to impliment any of my ideas into redecorating it. I've done the best I could at making it "us", but I've never been overly happy about the way it looks.

Don't get me wrong, I'm SOOO thankful that we found such a great place to live here in Brenham. (I know it was no coincidence that we met the owner's sister.) But all along, I have longed for a place of our OWN. A place that I can put my mark on, so to speak.

After much leisurely searching (since we DO have a place to live for the time being), we came across a nice house not too far from where we are now. From the outside, it doesn't look like anything amazing. It's just a simple house with a red door. But it was the inside that we were so impressed with. Wood floors through-out the entire place. Not a piece of carpet in site!! Fresh neutral colored paint, very open floor plan, living room, dining room, 3 bedrooms, 2 huge bathrooms, a breakfast nook, an office/sunroom and a huge back yard. It's like a blank canvas!

So...we prayed about it and felt like we were supposed to pursue it. So we did. We now have a contract down on the house and are waiting for inspections and appraising and some other lingo I don't understand. Please pray for us as we go through the rest of the process. I've been trying not to get too emotionally attached, but it has been hard for my husband who wants to hear my feelings about everything. (The fact that I have a huge folder on my computer full example pictures I have collected of ways that I want to decorate seperated by each room in the house should give him a hint or two about how I feel about the house! haha) We only want to be where God wants us. And we are just waiting to see how He will show us if this is it or not. The waiting is what is always the worst.

Hopefully in a couple of months we will be moving into a new house and I will be sharing a post about...OUR home!

...and because a post without photos is boring, here is one of our pip-squeaks doing what they do best. From my iPhone of course.

Winter is always touch and go for family photos even in southern Texas. After several reschedulings because of the cold, rainy weather and sickness, we finally got together for a fun session. If you can even call it that! Do we really ever have spare time? It's more like time we just choose to do something we like when we should really be cleaning something or running some boring errand. I have to be honest. It makes me nervous to shoot in full sun. I try to schedule my sessions for the evening. It's just easier to find that beautiful light... But I know that sometimes you just have to get out of that comfort zone, so I decided to go for it with this session. It was a bit harder to find those spots of open shade, but we did it! And this girl rocked her session! (Even though I still prefer evening sessions...haha)

I have really been neglecting this blog for the past month! It's embarrassing really, but I have been unbelievably busy. I'm going to be in a craft fair the 9th so I have been working my booty off creating things. Also we were out of the country for 2 weeks to where I can honestly say is the most beautiful place I have ever been. Sweet Little Man ~Brenham Area Newborn Photographer

I just love newborns. Their tiny fingers and toes, round little bellies and wrinkley knees. This little guy was just precious. At almost a month old, he was almost out of the newborn stage but he was still so tiny and so good to me because he slept practically the whole session! Our session got rained on so lighting was an issue and we didn't get to do any outside shots like we were hoping for, but we made do! And I finally got up the nerve to do some nakey shots! We shuffled him from set up to set up with no accidents and right at the end as mom was holding him and feeding him his bottle to comfort him, he tinkled all over her. Haha....it was hillarious! I don't know if his mom thought it was all that funny... but hey, what's a little baby tinkle gonna hurt?? :) Anyway enough words, here are some of my favorites from our session.

Although "I don't do weddings", I agreed to be a second shooter for a friend's wedding. I'm glad I said yes. It was a beautiful wedding full of worship. The couple sang to each other (like pros!) and to me that was very impressive. There is no way I could have kept it together singing to my handsome groom...we didn't even get through the song he sang to me without choking up! Here are a few of my favorite images from their special day.

This past weekend we got to spend a nice little overnight visit with our good friends and little baby J. You may remember her from here. Well she is one month old now. And just a sweet as ever! She seems to be such a content baby. I got to hold her more this time and I'm not really one to want to hold a newborn. They are just too small, I don't know what to do with them! But I couldn't stop staring at her as I held her. Her tiny little nose, lips and fingernails. Everything about her so intricate and so perfect. I'd say, God really knows what he is doing. He is the one True Artist.

The Divine Miss M...Again! ~ Brenham Children's Photographer

I've had many sessions with Miss M. You may remember this one. Well, she is getting older and was due for another. It was a beautiful day! Blue sky...white puffy clouds, that kinda day. I had all these great ideas for her. One in particular involving her white horse. So it was all set to meet that Monday evening. As I am driving out to their house, I notice dark skies in the distance.

No...this can't be.

It's supposed to be a beautiful clear evening!

So I get there and we pick out what she's going to wear,

the horse is ready...

and then the lighting starts.

So we change our plans a little. We bring the horse to a clearing behind their house instead of out in the field. Less chance of being struck by lightening? (what were we thinking??) We attempt to shoot, but M is nervous because the lightening is making the horse nervous. So we get a few decent shots. Then do a quick wardrobe change and go back out...

...and then comes the rain.

Luckily we were under thick trees so I got a few more. We will definitely be trying this again and next time I am checking weather.com before I get all excited!

Well, now that I've told the whole story, here are a few that I was happy with.

I had the complete honor of photographing the miracle of life just yesterday. We have been waiting 9 months and one whole week for this wee one to be here. Her parents are dear friends of ours and it was amazing to be able to experience this special event with them. I'm not a parent yet. So this was, literally, a very eye-opening experience for me. The fact that I made it through without fainting is truly a miracle in itself! I have learned A LOT in the past few days! Okay, enough words already... World, meet baby J!

Her name is Natalie. She's going to be famous some day. She is funny, she is uber talented, she talks -a lot ;) , she has a beautiful heart, she loves to sing - all the time -and does it well, she loves people, she loves Jesus, and the girl is GORGEOUS. She was nice enough to let me take her picture. A few of them... :) She also has a new hobby. Floral arranging. So we had a mini photoshoot with all her flowers. It was a rainy but fun day!

Houston Live Stock Show & Rodeo!

I looo♥ooove going to the Rodeo. Mainly because I love the carnival rides. They are my fave. Even though I do believe I am getting a little bit of a phobia of the things breaking and shooting me through the air like a slingshot! I think I panicked a little on every ride I got on this year! What is with that? But when the ride stops and I realize that I have survived it was really fun!

We got to see Brad Paisly in concert. I've never been a huge fan but he was actually pretty good live! My absolute favorite part of the Rodeo is the Mutton Bustin'. The announcer guy put it perfectly! "This is where we put your 5 year old on the back of a farm animal and call it entertainment!" Priceless. These little kids are so cute too. They fall off into the dirt and the adults jerk 'em up and they just smile and wave. Cracks me up every time!

So... I planted these Zinnia seeds early last week. Every day since then, I have been squatting down next to my flower bed and squinting to see if there are any little green sprouts popping up through the soil. This morning as we left the house to go into town for some shopping, there was a light rain. I said to my husband, well my flowers are getting watered today! When we came back this afternoon, I did as I always do and leaned down next to my beds. I noticed something tiny and green in the soil. I blinked a couple times and looked on down the row, there were more!! "My Zinnias are sprouting!!!!" I squealed to my husband. He just smiled at me real big. He knows how anxious I've been to see some form of life coming up from that soil. I am growing something! I know this is simple, I'm a simple kind of girl. But you have no idea how exciting this is to me. I've never had my own flower bed before. So this:
makes me pretty happy. :D

We didn't get to have our session until the week before her wedding because of dress alteration issues. So it was crunch time! For the second time this year, we got snow in South East Texas! What what? When if first started, it looked like some one was throwing down huge tufts of cotton from the sky. Huge! Our house looked so pretty in the snow... :) I couldn't help but take our picture in front of it. Then we figured our girls should share in the joy as well! Lolli wasn't so sure...but Piper was all about it! She escaped from the house 2 or 3 times trying to get out and explore!

I love the snow, but hate the cold! Winter, it's been fun.....but Spring, come soon!

Even if you don't have a significant other, I hope you told someone you loved them today! I hope you remembered not to be depressed or saddened by the fact you had no one to give you flowers that will wilt in a couple days or chocolates that will only make you feel guilty for eating them. (Even though those things are nice regardless.) Someone loves you. And everyone has someone to love. I hope you remembered that today! And also remember, Jesus loves you! :)

I was an only child for 7 years. I would have been fine with that. I love my sisters but I always wished I had been an only child. I was a funny kid, so I hear. Creative and liked to play dress up. Mom says I played well by myself. Life was sweet back then. Being unaware of the negative things, happy jumping in the puddles, playing in the dirt with my Hot Wheels (yes, I played with Hot Wheels), running around barefoot. Looking at these photos makes me wish I knew that little girl now. What happened to her? She grew up...that's what happened to her. And life happened. Not that it is bad this way. Just less enchanting.

Here are my fur babies! It has taken Piper {grey} a few days to get used to little Lolli {white}.... they play well together now. But what has me curious, is that usually when a game of chase breaks out, it always seems to be Lolli doing the chasing. Hmm...

I didn't get to post during Christmas because we were waaaaay out in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma and didn't have internet service for about a week! We were pretty much in the middle of a blizzard the day before Christmas and I got to make a snowman! Here are some photos I snapped before we had to come back to Texas.

where I have been all this time, we have been moving into the little house in the last post. We have gotten all the boxes moved in, now it's just the job of going through it all and figuring out where to put all of it! What a job! Plus we have a new addition to our family... a baby kitty! We found her in the parking lot of our apt complex. She was all cold and scared so we fed her and gave her a bath and I took her to the clinic to get her checked out and updated on her shots. So she now happily lives with us in our new house along with Piper who can't quite figure her out. Haha... The baby's name is Lollipop (Lolli). I'll post photos as soon as we get internet at the house Tuesday!

Way Over-due......

I spend way too much time online reading other people's blogs than I do updating my own!

Then a miracle happened and it snowed in HOUSTON! We were all pretty excited about that...just so you know, I do not work at Hunan Village. It just happened to be in the background.

We put up our Christmas tree even though we are about to move. How could I NOT put it up? That would be wrong...

A mini photoshoot for some friends: Oh, and one more thing... I DO get to live here after all!! We are renting it for now...but if everything goes smoothly and we still like it after a few months we may buy it! Woo hoo!!!
And then I got my hair cut AGAIN.... I think I'm okay with it. Well atleast for now! Haha

So I did what may have been my last wedding {for a while anyway} this past weekend. I did it for family, but weddings aren't my thing right now. Halloween in the K Household! ~ Houston Family Photographer

Halloween was pretty dull this year. In fact it was totally lame. I wore my costume to work and was the ONLY one in costume, when last year I wasn't the only one.... And we didn't do much the rest of the day. We did go {in our costumes!} see Stepfather....a very creep movie. Then we were going to go get a burger at Prince's Diner{yum} but by then I felt stupid being in costume, so we got it to go. Went back home, took silly pics and watched movies the rest of the night. Okay, so maybe it wasn't quite so lame. I did get to hang out with my hubby! Here are a couple pics!

Piper is my cat. I'm sure you have seen her in my previous posts. As a kitten, she just wasn't very cuddly. She didn't really want to lay in my lap or even next to me. She was content to lounge across from us on the ottoman. I so wanted her to be a lap cat but she just wasn't having it. And then the change happened. Ever since she has hit...um, puberty, she has been so needy. Following me around from room to room, meowing at my feet as if there was something I needed to do for her. Now she always jumps up on the couch while I'm working on the computer and makes a nest in my lap. When I say "makes a nest" I mean she kneads. Yes, she kneads my stomach. It does not make me feel all that great because there is a bit of cush {that I can hopefully get rid of soon} that has formed there in my one year of marriage. It gets to be a real annoyance, but then she finally will plop down, fold her arms in front of her and look up at me with squinted eyes as if indicate that it is "juuuuust right." And then there are some days when this happens:

{Please excuse the strange pasted look. It is not easy taken a picture of yourself from above with a 50mm lens. Haha}How is a person supposed to work in these conditions??

Got a little bored today. The hubby is super busy with school stuff right now, since it is comin' down to the wire. He graduates in 3 more months! YESsssss! Anyhow, so I was inspired by my sis to "play dress up" and take some photos of myself. I guess the theme was "denim and pearls" since that's what it ended up looking like! Oh well.... I find it hard to get creative when I'm taking my own photo.

Today I meandered over to Hobby Lobby to see what kinda fabric they had to offer. I found some cute polka dot material! I love polka dots and the old school rule about only wearing and using solids in a photo is out the door! Bring on the bright patterns! Now all I need is a newborn or toddler to try them out on! Anyone wanna help me out?

We looked at a house today. Not being able to do anything soon, I'm still a little skeptical about even looking. But I always allow myself to get carried away planning how I would decorate and where I would put the furniture or which counter the microwave would sit on in the kitchen and oh my! look, there is the perfect place for all my baking sheets!! Haha... Well, this house is just precious from the outside but when I walked in my heart started beating so hard! I can see all the possibilities this house has. Granted, the little old lady that must have lived here was a good decorator. For a little old lady. :) I'll let you see for yourlselves.

The Kitchen...notice all the great cabinets?? A person living in an apartment would feel like a queen with all these cabinets!Be still my heart......Hands down my fave room in the entire place. Look at all that yummy natural light!Strange little green bathroom. But I think I like it...and look, a claw foot tub!!!Me making my Pleeeeeeeeaze face in the master bedroom.I've never been this excited about a living arrangement before. I'm praying this is it! But I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Hard not to get my hopes up!

a Canon 50D!!!!! I decided to take the plunge and upgrade while I could! I have a wedding in a couple of weeks so I figured I should go ahead and get it so I could get used to it. It's pretty amazing. Everything looks so crisp and vibrant though it! I have had the idea for a while now to do a tea party shoot. Then I got a wild idea to do a shoot involving tutus, lollipops, and huge balloons. Well, how lucky am I to know two adorable little girls who would be more than happy to play dress up and model for me?! AK BRIDALS! Finally I get to post my first bridals ever! Halley and Josh were married in Honduras on the beach this past week. Wow, I bet that was rough...haha... We had a fun time doing Halley's bridals. It was mid-day {hopefully the last time I shoot in mid-day sun!}, super windy, thank goodness it was before the heat really set in!

Halley's now husband is a skater so we hung out at the local skatepark. The guys skating that day were more than happy to let us borrow one of their boards. :)

This weekend we got to see my husband's aunt and uncle and their two adopted boys. The smallest one becomes official today! We took the opportunity to get some photos of their sweet family.

I finally got to try my hand at a boy shoot. It's usually all girls or girls with a couple boys thrown in the mix. Brady's mom and gigi had some great ideas to help me though. This boy loves to read. And I had already seen this idea here and thought I would try it out. I loved how it turned out.

My first ever family session.... what a wonderful family! These are very good friends of mine. Tracey asked me to take a few pictures for her mom for mother's day. For such a short session, I got some great shots!

I had the priviledge of being the photographer for a lady's tea. The theme was The Mad Hatter's Tea Party. Everything was so colorful and there were so many elaborate hats! I even wore one. And I'm not a hat person usually. Guest list included Alice, the Mad Hatter and more! It was a fun day! Here are lots of photos!

Meet the Smith children. Ages 16 months, 6 and 8. We had a bit of a challenge on our hands getting all the kids to look and smile at one time, but when is that easy? Sweet kids and check out the eyes on that beautiful girl! The little one did not like my camera pointed in his face. Everytime I lifted my camera he would turn completely around and look the other way. Haha... The ones I did get with them all looking, I thought were really good ones.
